The arguements on why natural products are needed often centre around concerns on the safety of products made with synthetic ingredients or in simpler terms, chemicals. I am not going to go around that line, as the authorities, with their legislations and regulations and the cosmetic manufacturers with their social corporate responsibilities do take various precaution in ensuring the safety of the products designed. Scientists have contributed greatly by indetifying hazardous components in products from time to time. As consumers, we should know better than trusting the promotion information alone, and check the safety of ingredients used in any products (including those claiming to be natural / organic).

Let’s take a more positive approach towards why we need a natural solution. Plants have been used as food and medicine for generations. The parts of the plants used for such purposes often contain myriads of active compounds in them that give the desired impact. For example, lemon may contain over 70 volatile compounds! The modern science has not identified all the active compounds in each individual plants. Some identified ones have been studied extensively and their structures have been chemically synthesised in the factories. The potential of the plant ingredients is not limited to what has been identified by science! The unidentified compounds and the combination of the compounds is what gives the rich benefit of the plants. In this context, using plant ingredients means enjoying the whole benefit of the plants and not just the identified components! Aren’t we getting more benefits here?
